I remember feeling stumped with the last question. Describing myself was a tough thing to do, especially when I could only use one word to do so.

“You have a boyfriend, huh,” Bradley said with a smile.

Ugh. Why did I have to get that question?

Ignoring Bradley’s teasing, I began sorting through all the profiles, methodically placing them in five rows, one row for each type of questionnaire. I quickly reviewed the surveys of those who had the same set of questions as me. Only one other index card had a boyfriend or girlfriend listed. The rest had answered “no” for that question.

“Right, let’s get to it,” Megan said.

The three of us scanned the profiles for several minutes before any of us spoke. Bradley broke the silence by guessing the person’s name on one of the cards: “I think this one is a girl named Ella. I remember speaking to her, and she had a heavy New York accent. She also said that she was training for a marathon.”

The card was in the row containing all the questions that I had, only this card listed “New York” as its home state and “field and track” for the question about hobbies and sports.

I didn’t get a chance to speak with this Ella, but Megan seemed to vouch for Bradley’s assumption.

“Yes, I do remember her. She did have a heavy accent. I could barely understand her.”

“And this one,” Bradley said as he reached across the table, “I believe is someone named Madeline. She indicated that she loved watching old TV shows, so my guess is that she’s the one whose favorite show is I Love Lucy.”

“Well now, mate, did you happen to interview any males,” Megan asked Bradley in a tone that I couldn’t decipher—was she giving him a hard time, or was she teasing him? I was secretly glad that Megan had verbalized what I was thinking.

Bradley appeared taken back by Megan’s directness. “Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. See,” Bradley said, pointing his pencil to his pad. “Right here, Ethan. He has brown hair and um.” Bradley looked carefully at his paper. “I guess that’s all I wrote down.”

The three of us chuckled, silently at first, until our futile attempts to control our laughter resulted in full-fledged belly laughs. We couldn’t help ourselves.

A sea of “Shhhs” filled the air, which only made controlling our laughter harder.

“This one, I think, is a girl named Amy,” I said in an attempt to get us back on track. “She had blond hair with green tints to it, as if discolored by chlorine. I’m guessing that she’s a swimmer like the person who listed swimming under sports.”

“Brilliant,” Megan responded.

Over the next twenty minutes, we were able to deduce another sixteen questionnaires, give or take a few differences of opinion.

“Five minutes left,” one of the leaders called out.

“We only have eight left. We can do it, mates,” Megan said. “Check your notes. Is there anyone that you wrote down that we haven’t guessed yet?”

“We used everyone that I spoke to,” Bradley answered.
